And the youngest child thinks we are heathens…

Jun 15, 2011   //   by Jen   //   OurBlogs  //  Comments Off

Well, we have officially kicked off summer break! The kids and I met Auntie B at our favorite beach for fun in the sun and sand in our pants. Long gone are the days of Matthew being afraid of the sand (which I secretly loved because he would perch on the end of my lounge chair and happily watch the goings on around us, contained by his fear of that gritty floor) now he is only slightly timid about the water. The older two spent the majority of the time laying on the edge of the water letting waves crash over them. This is of course the part of the waves that churns the sand up like a blender, then depositing it in the tops and bottoms of unwitting children so that when they stand up their bottoms sag like the old days before swim diapers. We usually try to get lunch in before the sand completely envelopes them, a futile effort of course. Matthew is ready to dive into his sub hands coated like sugared doughnuts when I stop him. I tell him to go rinse off his hands in the water and he looks at me like I have sprouted a second head. Mary takes the lead and brings him to the water and I watch like its a silent movie. She gestures to him, he stares at her. She immediately drops to the ground and covers her own hands in sand, as a visual aid, and goes to the water and rinses her hands. Simple enough. He is still staring at her like she has just lost her mind. She just shakes her head and shrugs at me like “that’s all I got Mom”. She admits defeat and heads to the towel to eat her lunch. After a few minutes he finally gives in to the lack of civility and washes his hands off. A man’s gotta eat after all….

Call me crazy…

Summer vacation is coming and unlike most of my mommy friends I am psyched! Not because I am so crafty and enlightened in the ways of inspiring my children. I love being on our own schedule. I can embrace my spontaneity. I don’t have homework to do, I don’t have to worry about whether I sent this note or that permission slip. I guess I look forward to a little irresponsibilty. It is a slacker’s paradise! It may also be my inability to forsee the obvious strife of siblings who have had enough of each other. Or the inevitable “I’m bored mom!” that will be lobbed at me on a regular basis (regardless of the bikes, trampoline, swingset etc.) It is all worth it to me not to have to answer to anyone. If they get too antsy, beach day! If they are out of ideas to do outside I will happily send them out with sheets and clothespins to make a fort. Even if I have to take them off my bed! What a great way to kick off laundry day! When it gets too hot to be outside its movie time…So I guess it takes a little (very little) creativity, its all worth it to me to not be a slave to anyone else’s schedule. And you, like my dear friends can remind me, come July when I am pulling out my hair and offering my children to the first (not highest) bidder, that I wanted this…

Oh the Anticipation!

Being that it’s this time of year, most of you will assume I am referring to Christmas with such a blog title, and though I love this time of year, it is not the particular source of my excitement. No, it was a couple of weeks ago that I got butterflies in my stomach, as we were finally packed and leaving for our yearly trek to Disney World. And even though I will never get bored with seeing Mickey & his pals, it wasn’t exactly the source of what I was anticipating either. You see, no matter how well I pre-plan, how detailed my packing lists are, or how many dry runs we may go through before D-Day (as in, Departure), rest assure that there will be something (hopefully never someone) that is left behind.
The excitement of our trips now is that “Oh Sh*t” moment, when we realize what it is we have forgotten and how long into the trip it takes us to figure it out. We should start taking odds, at least to make it more interesting! Maybe if we created a pool, then we could start getting paid for the person that is closest to guessing what we left and when we discover it! Or make it more like a game of clue: “It’s our camera we left, in the kitchen, and it was my husband’s fault!” There’s also the “fun” of when you find out, and if the item forgotten is critical enough that it’s worth turning around for depending on how far we are into the trip. It’s truly is the game I love to hate!
Even when it happened on this trip (because as I have said before, it happens on EVERY trip), my husband tried to get me to laugh about it, since I had just reminded him at the beginning of this very trip how funny the phenomenon was from past experiences. But at the time I was too irritated, and had long been at my wits end, to appreciate the disturbing irony of the situation. This time it was my son’s coat that we forgot. I didn’t pack it, but instead left it on the hook where it always is, since he would need to wear it on the trip. My husband didn’t think anything of it, when he just hurried the kids out the door and into the car. So we were at our first major pit-stop of the trip when we realized what we had done (or in this case, not done)! And you might think, no big deal, we’re heading down south anyway…what will any of us need with a coat. This is where Captain Irony, my arch-nemesis, rears its ugly head, and we experience several days of record lows in good ol’ sunny Orlando! Needless to say, Wal-mart made out from us (actually all of the local Florida residents), and were quickly sold out of most of their winter wear by mid-week.
But yes, now I can look back at the “Oh Sh*t” moment and laugh, and scrapbook the memory so I can look back and see what we forgot and what mile marker we realized it was forgotten for future enjoyment…good times! Maybe I’ll even start taking pictures of our faces when we have the eye-opening experience (it will definitely make the scrapbook more interesting)! All I can say is, it may not be the vacation tradition I asked for, but I’m pretty sure with my luck, it will definitely be the one I never leave behind!

Family Vacation

Dec 13, 2010   //   by Christy   //   OurBlogs  //  Comments Off
We’re back from vacation and I must say, my high hopes were not let down!  Overall we had a great time, but naturally it wouldn’t be a family vacation without a few mishaps. Hurricane force winds mixed with a broken DVD player in the camper, made for a rather interesting “beach getaway” in the Keys.  We did venture out the morning the winds began, but since they seem to have a lack of public restrooms in the Keys, Anne of course had a potty mishap in the center of town, all over my dress.  She got new shorts and I got a napkin from the ice cream store to wipe myself off with.  On to Magic Kingdom in Orlando where Lyn and I had planned for Grace and Andy to have their surprise meeting in front of the big Christmas tree in the middle of the plaza.  Of course, we hadn’t informed Disney of our plans and they didn’t put up the tree until a couple days after we arrived.  We quickly altered our meeting area to what ended up being in front of the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon in frontier land.  A bit of a let down from the tree, but the kids didn’t know the difference and met in the middle of the street right before the big holiday parade was about to begin.  They were ecstatic and were joined at the hip throughout the rest of our time in Disney.  My most humiliating moment came when in the restroom at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure.  I had both the girls with me in the stall and Anne decided to swing open the door.  Now, I’m sure you all know how busy theme park bathrooms are and our stall was near the front of the line.  It was like a car accident.  Everyone had to slow down to look at the screaming mom sitting on the pot with her underpants around her ankles, but no one stopped to help.  Taking a line from Lyn…Good Times!  It really was though, and good or bad, at wits end or not, our trip wouldn’t have been the same without them!!
